Specialty coffee is coffee that scores 80 points or higher on a 100-point scale. Unlike terms like “premium” or “gourmet,” which have no set standards, specialty coffee is grown in ideal microclimates and offers unique flavor profiles with minimal defects.
Specialty coffee undergoes rigorous scoring by certified Q Graders from the Coffee Quality Institute. Beans are evaluated for defects, roasted samples are tasted (cupped), and scored on factors like aroma, flavor, and balance. Only top-performing beans earn the specialty label.
